No Sausage Rolls For You, WANE-15

UPDATE

WANE-15 has corrected the story. Thanks, Dirk.

In these "uncertain" times, media screwing up a story is almost certain.

Helping or Hurting?

A couple of questions for WPTA ABC21 and their contemporaries in local media.

Do you think it helps your audience or hurts your audience when your newscasts, or shows (as you call them) repeatedly show pictures of empty store shelves and long lines of shoppers (often of stores not even in our area)? Do you think that helps or hurts your audience deal with the obstacles and challenges they face?

Do you think it helps your audience or hurts your audience when you create and use imposing and menacing graphics/slides in your coverage? The bold letters, the use of the triggering color red...do you think that helps calm and inform the public?

One more question: Wouldn't it be more helpful and reassuring to concentrate more of your efforts on giving your audience useful and reassuring information from the experts and local authorities, and concentrate less on creating confusion, mistrust, and unrest among the people you claim to serve?

Asking for a friend.

Missed It, By A Decade

Indiana High School Basketball in March means close games, buzzer-beaters, and lots of excitement.

No doubt the Snider Panthers and their fans were excited by defeating Northrop to win their first Sectional title since 2009.

Fort Wayne's NBC (aka WPTA 21.2) shared the excitement, but seems to have trouble writing a correct headline, leaving out a word in the body copy, and bobbling the date of the Panther's last Sectional title...by a decade.

Snider Panthers pounces to Logansport Regional
6

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (FORT WAYNE'S NBC) - After fending off a strong second half surge by the Northrop Bruins, it is the Snider Panthers (18-6) who are sectional champions for the first time, since 2019, and are pouncing at a chance to damage in the Logansport Regional..

According to the Journal-Gazette story:

Snider (19-6, 7-2 SAC), a team that had already won on two spectacular buzzer-beaters and had claimed a two-point victory in the SAC tournament semifinals, won 59-56 for its first sectional title since 2009.

Quick and Professional Response

Kudos to the Journal-Gazette for a measured, informative, and professional response to a seemingly heated and baited question.

Hey, J-G!

The Maven has to wonder out loud if local TV news anchors are now moonlighting at the Journal-Gazette as copywriters.

Thanks, WANE-15

UPDATE:
Kudos to someone at WANE-15 for correcting the headline on this story this morning. It now matches the body copy and the facts.

Here's the corrected story/headline:

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — A person has been hurt in a shooting on Fort Wayne’s south side.
Police and medics were called around 3:40 p.m. to the 1900 block of Fox Point Trail, inside the Villa Capri Apartments complex off South Anthony Boulevard, on a report of a shooting.
Fort Wayne Police spokeswoman Sgt. Sofia Rosales-Scatena texted WANE 15 an update that the victim has injuries that are “non-life threatening.”
Dispatchers originally told WANE 15 that a victim was seriously hurt. A police sergeant at the scene said later the victim – and adult male – was listed in “life threatening condition.”
The sergeant said the victim drove himself to the hospital.

The shooting remains under investigation.

ORIGINAL POST:
Once again, WANE-15 confuses their viewers with a news story that contradicts itself. Yellow has been added by the Maven for emphasis.

What is the condition of the victim, and who is the source of that information?
