The kids at WANE TV News just a bit too informal. Drive by shooting = good. Drive by = not good. The bottom line, is someone still got shot and their family/friends don't appreciate newsroom nerds trivializing the matter.
FWMM: LOL...I thought the description of the shooting was quite misleading. I called it more of a DRIVE-UP shooting, and that's based on the apparent location of the shell casings in the street. Shame those running the story can't make such basic conclusions. Good post.
Technically, the use of the word in social media is acceptable. However, media continues to trivialize murder, as it increases ratings and has become an almost daily occurrence.

Good post.
Stay safe out there.
Get a clue, both of you.
ReplyDeleteTwitter = Informal
New York Times = Formal
Drive-up? Is it a movie theater?
Drive-by is perfectly acceptable in all forms, according to the AP Stylebook. It's also completely acceptable when it's in the context of a shooting.

ReplyDeleteIf only there were daily murders in Fort Wayne...
ReplyDeleteYour contradiction is magical. :) Like this blog. It's "technically" acceptable.. BUT THERE TRIVIALIZING IT!
The word drive-by IS acceptable, so by posting it on Twitter it's not trivializing.
You can't have it both ways, Maven.
You miss the sarcasm, my friend.
